Healthier swaps for Halloween candy

Tomorrow evening, my 5 year old and I will return from Trick or Treating with a plethora of your traditional Halloween candies: M&Ms, Milk Duds, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Peppermint Patties, Twix, Twizzlers, you get the idea. While a treat here or there is fine, wouldn’t it feel so much better to have a healthier version to indulge in? A version that contained ingredients that fueled your body while still taking care of your cravings. Today I set out to replicate two of these favorites and was pleasantly surprised by the results…so was my 5 year old!

Superfood Peanut Butter Cups (makes 6 mini peanut butter cups)

There are several different version of these but I tweaked a few of them to make them the way I thought would be the best. I hope you like them!

Ingredients:

1/2 scoop Chocolate or Vegan Chocolate Shakeology

2 tsp coconut oil

1/2 tsp vanilla extract

2 tbsp semisweet chocolate chips

2 tsp raw honey, divided

1 tbsp powdered peanut butter

1 tbsp raw almond butter or natural peanut butter

1/4 tsp sea salt

Directions:

1. Melt 2 tbsp chocolate chips and coconut oil in a microwave safe bowl in 30 second increments, stirring after every 30 seconds to ensure the chocolate doesn’t burn

2. In a small bowl, combine chocolate Shakeology, melted chocolate mixture, 1 tsp raw honey and vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth

3. In a separate bowl, whisk together powdered peanut butter and almond butter/peanut butter.

4. In a greased, nonstick mini muffin pan, press 1 tsp of chocolate mixture on bottom of pan and slightly up the sides.

5. Fill with 1 tsp peanut butter mixture

6. Spread and flatten 1/2 tsp more of the chocolate mixture on top and sprinkle with sea salt.

7. Freeze for 30 minutes until hard and then pop out of the muffin pan.

Caramel Date Bites (aka Healthier Milk Duds) (makes 12 pieces)

Ingredients:

5 pitted Medjool dates

1/2 tsp caramel extract

1 tbsp raw cacao powder

2 tsp coconut oil

1 tbsp coconut sugar

Directions:

1. In a high speed blender (like a Vitamix), blend dates and caramel extract until they are finely chopped and the consistency of paste.

2. Melt coconut oil and combine with cacao powder and coconut sugar. Whisk together vigorously until incorporated.

3. Roll the date mixture into small balls, about 1/2 inch in diameter

4. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and dip the dates into the chocolate mixture. Place on parchment paper and let freeze for 20 minutes until the chocolate coating hard hardened.

Sure, they don’t taste exactly like their traditional counterpart but they are packed with some amazing ingredients and superfoods including:

dates

raw cacao powder

coconut oil

Shakeology

Try it out and see what you think!
